Wudhu: the forgotten element of ibadah
A'salaamu alaikum ya'll. Sometimes I "stumble" across a gem from our deen that I feel I just have to share. For some of you, this is probably old hat :-) but for others it might be as illuminating as it was for me. For all of us, may it inspire and motivate us to improve ourselves. Amin!
A and I were discussing wudhu the other day. I had a question about a hadith I had heard that wudhu washes your sins away. A related the following hadith from RasoolAllah:
Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When a Muslim servant (of Allah) or a believer (Mumin) washes his face (in the course of Wudhu), every sin he has committed with his eyes is washed away from his face along with the water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought is erased from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet walked is washed away with water, or with the last drop of water, with the result that he comes out cleansed of all sins.” [Sahih Muslim]
Subhanallah, how Allah forgives us! Even in our preparation for prayer there are untold blessings. So I was curious if this holds true even if you have wudhu.
For example, you make wudhu for dhuhr and asr comes around but you still have your wudhu. If you decide to make ablution again are you ridding yourself of these sins?
The way A explained it made so much sense masha'Allah. He reminded me that ridding ourselves of physical najasa (dirt) is only a small portion of why we make wudhu. We are also cleansing ourselves spiritually of the filth that has accumulated.
Imagine your ruh (soul) as if it were a sole. The sole of a shoe, not a fish. :-D Think of how it looks after you've been slogging through the mud and muck outside. It dries on, sticks there, and slowly, slowly, crumbles off, bit by bit. Usually on someone's white carpet or freshly mopped floor. LOL But I digress.
Anyway I can very easily envision our soul becoming soiled in that same manner. Maybe you spoke rudely about someone or lost your temper with your children. Perhaps it's something a little deeper; maybe you took that second look or had anger in your heart. All of these things build up in our ruh and need to be cleansed.
Of course, making wudhu does not absolve you from major sins such as shirk (authubillah!), murder, or zina but you get the idea. It removes all those small, daily sins that sneak up on us.
There are a few things you must do to get this blessing:
1. Have the correct niyyah (intention) to make wudhu to cleanse your ruh and please Allah.
2. Perform your ablution in the name of Allah by pronouncing "Bismillah" before you begin.
3. Correctly make wudhu with the proscribed motions in the correct order: hands, mouth, nose, face, lower arms, hair, ears, and feet.
4. Only make 3 of each motion. For example, sometimes my nose might still feel stopped up but we are only to do 3 times. Doing it more is makruh (disliked). After we finish wudhu we can then do more if we feel it is necessary.
5. Do not stop your wudhu to speak, dry your face, etc. This is makruh to do so.
6. You can make make dua; I've found a few different examples (look here) of this so I think it depends on what madhab you follow. This step is optional but it is used to increase the hasanat (blessings for good actions) you receive.
So insha'Allah this might have helped you view wudhu in a different light. For myself, I always felt if I had wudhu I was all set and didn't bother to make it again. Insha'allah now I will be more careful to always make wudhu before salaat unless time is truly of the essence.
And with Allah lies ALL success. :-)

Getting ready for Ramadan!

A'salaamu alaikum ya'll. We are in full "Ramadan is almost upon us" mode in my house. The kids are making all their grand plans for the Eid already lol and I've even found a couple of Eid outfits. However, as I have stressed to the kids, Eid is NOT the purpose of Ramadan. In my case, getting 4 kids dressed to the nines takes more than a little advance planning so I have gotten a head start. However I want us as a family to get the most out of Ramadan. Here's what we are going to do:
1. Make our list of goals. I made a list last year in this post; let's look back at it and see how I did (cringing already!)
a. Praying salaat as soon as it's called. Alhamdulillah, I made great progress!
b. Work on Arabic everyday. Negative. :-( I never work on it. OK goal not met.
c. Learn surat-ul-an nas. Negative. I learned no new surahs. :-( Goal not met.
d. Read English meaning of Qur'an in sync with taraweeh prayers. Needed more work.
e. Eat only halal zabiha meat. Woot-woot! Another win for team Jeanna!
Score: 2 out of 5 nailed, 1 with poor progress and 2 absolute losses. Wow I need to really step up my commitment this year. You know I did a revised list herewhich really was smarter considering my personal life last year. :-) Anyway I'll make a new list this year insha'allah soon. OK on with the rest of this post.
I told the kids to make their lists and we'll go over them tomorrow so we can come up with a plan. If they are too far-reaching they will get burnt out and make no progress. If they are too simple same thing so insha'allah we'll help guide them in their goals and how to best achieve them.
2. Make a schedule for attending taraweeh. My husband generally goes every night but it is best for all (not just women) to pray taraweeh at home. Maybe because you get to practice all the qur'an you know? However as most of us aren't hafiz qur'an we enjoy praying at the masjid so we can hear the entire Qur'an. You know, one of my shames is I have never listened to the whole Qur'an during Ramadhan. I usually help babysit half the nights but alhamdulillah now money does not dictate my schedule so insha'Allah I can participate more.
Sorry keep getting sidetracked. Back to the schedule. We will decide which nights we will all go as a family insha'allah. Also if we want to break fast there. Our masjid caters iftar for the whole community so sisters can concentrate on ibadah masha'allah. It's actually very nice and insha'allah I'll avail myself of that help often. Hmm maybe I should take a plate to make for Aaminah the next day so I don't have to cook just for her. :-)
3. I am toying with the idea of no electronics during Ramadhan but... big shame here... I really like being connected. I could say no movies, no tv but then what about me on my laptop? Even if I am not playing games, it still keeps me from ibadaat. Maybe no tv, video games or movies and I only use the laptop for email correspondance, bill paying, an blogs of a helpful nature? Hmmm need to discuss further with husband but I'll let ya'll know.
OK so it's becoming abundantly clear to me I can't finish this post til I talk to A about it. lol So let's just call this part of my tentative plan and then I'll update as things progress insha'allah.
Please if ya'll have some great ideas for family, ways to worship Allah swt together, share them! I am all ears and need the nasiha ya'll! And let's all remember the main goal of Ramadhan is to draw closer to Allah swt and increase our worship of Him.

2nd post of the day: I is a college student agin

*View of campus where I'll be attending some classes*
A'salaamu alaikum ya'll. Please note the grammatical error in my title as well as the obvious "suthern" accent. Go ahead, laugh. I'll wait.
OK so I registered for my classes alhamdulillah. I was THRILLED I didn't have to take my Anatomy and Physiology I and II over again. Yippee! I was also happy because of my steller grades in said subjects I was exempted from taking General Bio. Yippee again! THEN I was able to move out of one math class and just put into the college algebra. Hmmm just gets better huh?
However I do need to take some lower level courses I somehow managed to ignore first time 'round. I am doing Sociology 101 and Psychology 101. I wanted to take more interesting classes but these are required so alhamdulillah at least those are 2 easy peasy A's insha'Allah.
That leaves my history elective. They don't have really interesting classes here unfortunately (its a smallish community college) so I'll be doing US history from inception to 1855 or so. I know much more about World History than US so I thought I should remedy that.
Now the math and sociology are both online courses. Yes! The psych and history are on campus but I elected to take night classes (pending A's complete approval) so I'll be out on Mondays and Thursdays pretty late. I'll be double checking with him but I think its best with 4 kids and 2 adults who have various appointments and errands which can only be accomplished in daytime hours.
Sisters, make dua for me please. Not for the school work portion; I love to learn and study and I am a good student masha'Allah. Just pray that I can keep up with school and house work and children and husband and keep my deen first and foremost. I wish I could study Islam instead but my situation dictates something different right now.
If A and I go overseas at any point I want a career where my US passport and degree will ensure a western salary and I can also do more formal study there in Qur'anic Arabic and fiqh classes. Insha'Allah.
Alrighty that's that and I am excited and looking forward to being BUSY! Ma salaama
March 2, 2010
A'salaamu alaikum ya'll. Wow it's been a month! I am sooo busy and really feel guilty for sitting here right now to update because I have many tasks to accomplish and only 24 hours in a day! ;-)
I have signed up with FlyLady to help me get organized again. I had everything pretty under control when I lived alone with just Aaminah but now with so many people in the home and consolidating two households (personalities, food tastes, and THINGS!) I need to get a new handle on my home. :-) I like flylady because they send daily email reminders about things to do in your home so you dn't forget them. Insha'Allah I'll report back as to whether I have kept up with her regimen or (more likely) taken what I like of it and then made it my own.
Make du'a for me and my family that we contingue to grow together in love for Allah and I ask that Allah fills my heart with mercy and understanding so I might be more patient, loving, and accepting. Amin! :-)

Ramadan Mubarak and sicky icky baby girl
A'salaamu alaikum ya'll and a great big southern Ramadan Mubarak! Now can't you just imagine how that sounds in my accent? :-)
I have a list of things (internal) I want to work on this Ramadan:
1. Praying each salaah as soon as it is called. Sometimes with Aami (or other less important reasons) I get sidetracked. The shaitaan would like nothing more than to make us leave off our prayers! Alhamdulillah the shaitaan are shackled during Ramadan so insha'allah may we be successful in all our personal endeavors.
2. Work on Arabic everyday. Whether it's listening AND practicing my pronounciation or working on writing and recognizing the letters, at least 15 minutes.
3. Learn one new Surah. I think I will learn Surat-an-Nas insha'Allah.
4. Try to read my English translation Qur'an in order to keep pace with Taraweeh. On the night I don't babysit (we have babysitting for Taraweeh at our masjid) insha'Allah I will read along
5. Eat only halal zabiha meat. Here in my city we only have one fresh meat grocer and its double what I pay at the grocer. I have read opinions by Shaikhs who say it's ok, say Bismillah, etc. but i know inside I feel guilty. Make dua that Allah makes this easy on me amin.
OK I don't wanna overload myself. I like to keep my goals doable because let's be honest, we still have our normal lives as well; work, cleaning house, cooking, caring for the children, etc.
Now to Aami. She is having a case of the yucky snotty nose which in turn is giving her a cough which is IN TURN making her gag and get sick. :-( So I've been cleaning up the floor alot the past few days. Now her little nose is raw and sore. I need to just use my hand and water to clean it, no more toilet paper.
I have my boys this weekend as well so I'll probably be a little too busy to log on. Insha'Allah I pray every one has a great start to their Ramadan!
Wasalaam,
Umm Aaminah
